Tips For Forming An IT Disaster Recovery Plan For Your Business

Posted on: 25 April 2022

Are you worried about what would happen if you had an IT-related disaster at your business? If so, it's important that you come up with a solid plan so that you can implement it. Here are some tips for forming an IT disaster recovery plan.

Create The Initial Documentation

Everything starts with creating all of the initial documentation for your disaster recovery plan. This means coming up with policies for who has access to certain data, how data is securely stored, and other policies related to your business's IT department. Without these two things in place, it can be difficult to prevent or prepare for a disaster.

Create A Data Backup Plan

A common problem that businesses face is not having their data backed up properly. This means having your data in at least three locations, with one of those locations being offsite. This prevents data from being stolen, lost due to a flood or fire, or lost simply due to failed storage drives. Having a plan for how you will backup data, and actually following through with it, will help you avoid preventable data loss.

Create An Emergency Response Plan

You need to decide what type of incident will be considered an emergency, and who is going to respond to it. For example, if there is a power outage at your office and equipment running on a battery backup needs to be shut down properly, who is going to be responsible for traveling to the office to make sure that happens? You'll want to make sure that everyone's responsibilities are clear and concise so that people can take action promptly.

Decide Who Will Talk To The Media

If you have a very big company, it's possible that a data breach or loss of data will end up making the news. It's important to know who is going to be responsible for talking to the media about it and what kind of response they will give. You may want to write out some statements that can be used in certain situations, such as a data breach, so that it is ready to go and does not distract you from what needs to be done to recover from the data breach.

These are just a few things that you need to come up with a proper IT disaster recovery plan. Speak with a disaster recovery specialist in your area for more tips on what you can do.
